How is God speaking to you?

Over the past few weeks the leader of my Men’s Bible study asked the question “How would you define your relations with God? (This was a question from Kyle Idleman “Not a Fan”)  If you were asked that question what thoughts come to your mind?   The following week he asked the question “Are you in communication with God?” Again if you were asked that question what would your response be?

I’m RW and let’s have a fireside chat about “How is God speaking to you?”

Well when I heard the first question “How would you define your relations with God?” my first thought was one of reverence.  I thought about it some more and my Bible Study leader asked “Do you treat your relations with God like a supply closet?”  The Bible says we can ask – John 14: 12-14 and Mathew 7:7.  But the real question is every time you pray to The Lord God are you always asking for something?  How often do you take the time to thank God?  Here is some scripture about giving thanks – Ephesians 5:20, 1 Thessalonians 5:18, and Psalm 106:1.  How often do you take the time to just listen?  Here is some scripture about listening Proverbs 2:1-5, Mark 4:21-25 and Romans 10:17.  I do not want to always come to God asking.   I want to make this it clear that am not saying you shouldn’t ask God for anything.  What I’m saying is that the majority of your interactions and conversations with God should not be your asking for something.  If I had a relationship with someone who always ask me for something when they came around how would that make me feel?  When I approach God I want to give him praise for what He is doing in my life.  I want to give Him Love like the Love he gives me.  Sometimes I want to just be quiet, still and be in awe in His presences.  He longs to have a relationship with us and it shouldn’t be based on what He can do for us but who He is.

Then there is the second question “Are you in communication with God?”  Communication is defined as a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system.  Prayer is part of communication; however it is not the only part.   Another part is God’s Word the Bible.  Here is some scripture about God’s Word – 2 Timothy 3:16-1, 1 Thessalonians 2:13, Joshua 1:8 and Hebrews 4:12.  In order to understand God’s will we have to be in His Word.  When someone prays to God and not in His Word how do they expect to know His answer?  How would they recognize His response (Proverbs 18:13)?  When I am communicating I always remember it needs to be a two way conversation.  Yes, I am asking God for certain things but I am trying to understand His will in the ask (Deuteronomy 28:1-2).  In order to know the response when He answers I need to be in God’s Word.  The more I am in God’s Word the more I am able to recognize God’s response clearly. 

These two questions made me think and look at my relationship with God.   I would ask you to think about the questions.  How would you define your relations with God?  Are you in communication with God?
