Spiritual Heart Health Check
It is that time of the year when I get my yearly health checkup, physical examination. While doing my physical I told my doctor that I need to schedule an appointment with a Cardiologist. I needed to get a checkup on my heart. That conversation reminding me of a comment a friend said to me. He said “Have you ever noticed that if someone is having trouble with their heart they go see a doctor right away. But do they go directly to The Lord for their spiritual heart health check?”

When someone is having heart issues it is wise to go see a doctor right away. If you do not go there could be a serious issue that could result in death if untreated. I would think most people would seek immediate help. However when it comes to your spiritual heart do you get a spiritual heart health check? The Bible says in Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” Romans 2:5 “But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when His righteous judgment will be revealed.” Also Matthew 15:18-20 speaks to the issues of the heart.
When went I went to the doctor’s office I was required to fill out paperwork regarding my medical history and family’s medical history. But when it comes to The Lord God, He already knows our history. He knows what is best for us. So why do Christians at times self-medicate or self-prescribe for our spiritual heart? The Bible says Proverbs 21:2 (NASB) “Every man’s way is right in his own eyes, But the Lord weighs the hearts. Romans 1:21 “For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.” We should instead be seeking The Lord God and reading, studying, and meditating on His word (Bible) for a healthy spiritual heart. Psalm 51:10 (ESV) “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” Ezekiel 36:26 “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” and Psalm 34:18 “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
I am scheduled to have several tests on my heart. I am hoping the tests will reveal any issues with my heart. If your spiritual heart was tested what do you think it will reveal to the Lord? What issues would He find? The Lord desires us to have a clean and pure heart. Matthew 5:8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” How will you know the condition of your spiritual heart if you do not get a check-up? The human heart needs a daily check-up. You need to be in God’s word daily Joshua 1:8.
Your body is a temple for the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). So it is very important that we take care of it. When it comes to your spiritual heart what is the condition of yours?
